Too much kick­ing

I was first in­tro­duced to rugby 70 years ago at Uphol­land Gram­mar School, near Wi­gan. I re­mem­ber our teacher drilling this mantra into us: “If you kick the ball ahead, you are giv­ing it to the en­emy, so at least it must go into touch.”

Through­out my life I played, coached and re­peated the mantra.
