“This was when I was coaching in Ireland in 1998. It was just one of those times I was on the sideline, all the photographers were there and I just pulled a funny face for the camera.

“Externally people think I’m serious and that I don’t show a lot of emotion, but those who know me would say I’m completely different. I don’t mind the external way people see me. Sometimes in a game I’ll be really emotive but by the time the camera turns to me I’ve calmed down.

“I like having a joke and playing pranks. Prav Mathema likes to hide in cupboards and try to scare you, so I always try to get him back. He’s got OCD and likes everything on his desk to be perfect, so I’ll go along and put things in different places.

“Lions tours involve such long days and you have to switch on, but you’ve got to enjoy what you’re doing as well.”
