THE BAT­TLE of the boot be­gan early that night in Paris, Greig Laid­law do­ing his kick­ing drills down one end of the U Arena sur­rounded by his Cler­mont team-mates and Finn Rus­sell do­ing the same down the other end, watched over by his new pals at Rac­ing and an ex­pec­tant home crowd.

“Two Scot­tish boys in the mid­dle of this very French rugby oc­ca­sion,” says Laid­law. “It was kinda cool. You know what Finn’s like. He’s all chat and crack. At one point in the pre-match I turned around and he landed a nice one, straight be­tween the sticks. He looked down at me and ges­tured, ‘Look and learn. That’s how you do it’. Ha­haha.
