THE BATTLE of the boot began early that night in Paris, Greig Laidlaw doing his kicking drills down one end of the U Arena surrounded by his Clermont team-mates and Finn Russell doing the same down the other end, watched over by his new pals at Racing and an expectant home crowd.
“Two Scottish boys in the middle of this very French rugby occasion,” says Laidlaw. “It was kinda cool. You know what Finn’s like. He’s all chat and crack. At one point in the pre-match I turned around and he landed a nice one, straight between the sticks. He looked down at me and gestured, ‘Look and learn. That’s how you do it’. Hahaha.
