Armed police used in arrest operation

POLICE are still hunting two thugs behind a suspected stabbing in Runcorn after a 19-year-old man was arrested and released with no further action on Sunday in connection with the investigat­ion.

Cheshire Constabula­ry said the assault took place at about 5.30pm on Tuesday, April 4.

The victim, 37, had been walking along the Bridgewate­r Canal from Spur Road and was approached by two men as he passed under a bridge. He attended Halton Hospital for his injuries, transferre­d to Warrington and was later discharged.

A Cheshire police spokeswoma­n said the incident was called in as a ‘stabbing’ but the nature of the attack had not been confirmed.

She added that there were no descriptio­ns of the attackers.

The incident is being treated as a ‘serious assault’.

A North West Ambulance ● Service spokeswoma­n said there had been no requests for paramedics to attend the area between 4.30pm and 6.30pm.

There were hopes of a breakthrou­gh over the weekend after a search resulted in the arrest of a 19-year-old man in Runcorn Old Town on Sunday.

A helicopter took part in the operation to track down the suspect.

Cheshire And North Wales Alliance Armed Policing (AAP) issued a tweet saying its team had assisted Runcorn police with a Taser deployment.

It said the male had previously made off prior to arrival.

However, he was later released action.
