Hero sculpture under way

-

FURTHER images have shown the progress of the statue being sculpted in honour of a Widnes Victoria Cross (VC) recipient.

Last week, the Weekly News reported work had begun on building the tribute to Sgt Thomas Mottershead.

The statue will be sited in Victoria Park in the heart of the town with a planned official unveiling date of April 2018. ●

The appeal has reached £56,000 and is now just £4,000 away from its funding target since being launched in 2014.

It is being sculpted by David Annand and fresh pictures have shown the progress of the statue which is being moulded in clay, before being finished in bronze.

The pilot served in the Royal Flying Corps during the Great War, the fore- runner of the Royal Air Force which was founded in April 1918.

The airman – born at 6 Vine Street – landed his aircraft in January 1917 which had been set ablaze over the Western Front and saved his observer’s life, but later died from his injuries and was awarded the VC posthumously.
