Hornets lose out to St Jude’s

-

HFH U13 12 Wigan St Jude’s U13 32 THIS top of the table encounter turned out to be a real tough game for Hornets against a very big Wigan St Jude’s side.

St Jude’s were on top early on as Halton struggled to get any good field position and they scored two early tries capitalising on Hornets’ mistakes.

Hornets finally got some field position and opened St Jude’s up down the left only for a great try-saving tackle to deny Joe Riley scoring.

The Hornets were 16-0 down at half-time but came out in the second half on the front foot and played the type of rugby they are more renowned for. Hornets got their first points as Harry Keeley showed an electric turn of pace to score from 60 metres giving the opposition full-back no chance of stopping him.

Hornets were now playing with added confidence and should have scored again on two occasions but took a couple of wrong options.

Eventually, Riley was put into space and he finished expertly from 20 metres out. Teammate Lewis Hughes added his second conversion.

Sadly for Hornets, Wigan pounced on two more errors to score twice more and run out winners 32-12.

Although second best in the contest, there were some very good performances from man-of-the-match Aiden Doolan and Wigan’s choice for that honour, Harry Keeley. Both were closely followed by George Delaney and Nathan Bannerman.

HFH U9 Blacks 12 Newton Storm U9 5 THE U9 Blacks put on a super display of rugby at home to Newton Storm.

A fierce defence meant Newton struggled at times to offer up much of a threat to the Hornets who all too often replied with a well-worked try.

Hornets’ speed and clever offloads often left Newton standing. The hosts were quick to press advantages and were fast off the line to close down attacks, showing great attitude and determination. Once Hornets took the lead they never looked back.

Man-of-the-match was George Daly, with the parents’ player honour going to Ben Simmons.

Evan Keeble took the coaches’ player award.
