Betts hails Ince and Chamberlain

-

ONE of the stand-out performances for Widnes at the Magic Weekend undoubtedly came from 20 year-old winger Ryan Ince.

The Widnes Academy product has spent much of the current season out on loan at League One side Hunslet.

But he came into Denis Betts’s injuryravaged side for Saturday’s game against Wakefield in Newcastle and did himself proud. A brilliant first half cover tackle on Trinity flyer Ben Jones-Bishop was followed after the break by a superb try which saw him cut inside experienced opposition full-back Scott Grix on a 40-metre gallop to the line.

Ince recently signed an extension to his contract which will keep him at the Select Security Stadium next season and his showing against Wakefield delighted coach Betts.

He said: “Ryan Ince is really starting to show himself and have the confidence to use the pace he’s always had. As well as the tackle on Jones-Bishop and his try, in the second half he turned around after we’d put the ball down and chased them down on the break. We’re seeing a real determination from him.

“We’ve been working hard so he doesn’t just sit in the wing which was a tendency during his junior career.

“He’s strong and it looked like one of the quickest blokes in the league was standing still with how quickly he caught him on Saturday.”

Betts also praised centre Ed Chamberlain, the man who set Ince free for his try against Trinity, who was brought back from his loan spell at Whitehaven for Saturday’s encounter.

He added: “The big one for me is Ed Chamberlain. He’s been plying his trade in League One and the side he’s been playing in hasn’t been going too well. But we brought him back off loan and I thought he was really solid and took his chance really well.” ● The Vikings are offering two half-term camps for children in Years 2-6 next week.

Kids can be enrolled on the ‘Kiwi Camp’ (June 1) and the ‘Leaders Camp’ (June 2) where they will be able to train like their favourite players and can also rub shoulders with them.

The ‘Kiwi Camp’ will have appearances from some of the New Zealanders currently in the first-team squad, whilst the ‘Leaders Camp’ will have the two co-captains and two vice-captains, Chris Houston, Joe Mellor, Aaron Heremaia and Tom Gilmore attending.

The Kiwi Camp will also offer the chance for the children to sit down with the players during lunch and quiz the stars on what it takes to be a Rugby League player.

All children that take part in either camp will receive a ticket to attend the Vikings clash with Catalans Dragons on June 4. ● For full prices and further details and to book onto either or both camps please telephone 0151-495 2250 or visit the Vikings Superstore located in Tesco Extra in Widnes.
