Mill Brow grind out triumph over Wellington as Powell wins decider
ON Friday night in the Widnes & District Darts League, the 2017-18 Winter League commenced.
In Division One, Goldmine against Widnes Cricket Club, lost the first game to the Cricket Club’s Rob Morris.
The Goldmine then levelled through Gaz Johnson, before taking the lead with a win from Terry Roach with eight darts in the second leg.
The rally continued as the Goldmine upped their game, taking the next four encounters through Sean Bell and Terry Roach (12 darts), Peter Mullally and Tim Hunt (18 darts), Barry Noonan and Phil Corless (15 darts) and Jimmy Holden (18 darts) sealing a match victory.
The Cricket Club stopped the rout as Dean Morris and Andy Atkin gave them the last two contests to put some respectability on the final scoreline.
Halton Stadium, facing Widnes Bowling Club, conceded the first game to the Bowler’s Alan Clark.
John Kilkenny then levelled for the Stadium with 15 darts in the first leg. The Bowler then secured the next four contests via Tex Bowles (12 darts in the second leg), Alan Clark and Alex McGill, Joe Batty and Scott Grady and Tommy Robertson and Tex Bowles sealing their triumph.
The Stadium but did not let the Bowler have it all their own way, as wins from Alan Magee and Colin Rigby (18 darts in the first leg) added to the their tally.
Dave Gerrard then claimed the final contest wrapping up a 6-3 victory for Widnes Bowling Club.
The Mill Brow SC, against the Wellington Inn, conceded the first game to the Wellington’s Barry Highfield.
The Brow’s Carl Hackney then took the second game to make it 1-1. The Wellington went ahead again, this time through John Glover.
But again, the Brow were on their tails, with a win from their opening pair, Ray Linger and Paul Linger (17 darts in the third leg).
This was fast becoming a tag match as Karl and Ste Whitfield’s win with a 19 dart leg in the next game, was soon cancelled out by a victory from the Brow’s Dave Powell and Carl Hackney with 18 darts in the third leg.
A further win apiece from the Wellington’s Anthony Hall (18 darts) and the Brow’s Paul Linger could not separate the sides as the score was 4-4.
The Mill Brow SC’s Dave Powell then stepped up to the oche and resolved the outcome as he took the final game with legs of 19 and 15 darts.
The Millfield, against Simms Cross Institute, secured the first game through Danny Wood with a 17-dart first leg. Tony Green then levelled for the Stute.
The Millfield then took the lead again via Ian Wall (18 darts first leg) only to see the Stute’s opening pair, Ged McPartland and Dave Batty level the score, including an 18 dart second leg. Both teams were equally determined as a further win apiece from the Millfield’s Danny Wood and Ian Wall and the Stute’s Andy Abbott and Glynn Owen (16 darts first leg) kept the score level at 3-3.
The Millfield then surged ahead, with two in a row from Mike Howard (18 darts) and Billy Fox giving them the vital fifth point and the match. The Stute’s Andy Abbott then took the final game with legs of 19 and 13 darts.
