Focused Wilde setting sights on first-team place

-

● WIDNES back-rower Sam Wilde is looking to make his mark as he begins pre-season training following his permanent move to the Vikings.

Wilde signed a two-year deal in September having impressed during a month’s loan from Warrington Wolves earlier in the season.

It has taken the 22-year-old no time to settle back in at the Select Security Stadium and he is ready to hit the ground running after successful rehab on a leg injury.

He said: “There’s a great set of lads here and everyone is really positive and ready. They’ve had a good break, been away with their families, and now everyone is ready to rip in.

“The rehab is massively important, so you don’t fall behind the pack. With the help of the Vikings’ physio team, they’ve got me back to being fully-fit for day one of the pre-season. I’m ready and doing everything with the lads.”

With some keen competition for places in the back-row, Wilde intends to nail down a regular first-team spot and a he’s hoping a good pre-season will help him do just that.

He added: “Every player will tell you the same thing – whether you’re a senior player, a young guy coming into the team, or a new signing – everyone wants to impress to keep a place or stake a claim for one. That’s my intention, and the intention for all of the boys. Everyone is pushing each other to get better.” ● 2018 Viking Stronghold Members can enjoy access to every Super League home game, including the regular Super 8s campaign, as well as Academy home fixtures. Sunday, November 9, 1980 REDUCED to 12 men after the third minute sending-off of Eddie Cunningham, the Chemics recovered to beat the Kiwi tourists 14-7.

Widnes went in front when Keith Elwell reacted to a high kick from Mick Adams, with Mick Burke adding the extras, but the tourists soon reduced the margin to three points.

Two Burke penalties edged Widnes further ahead before the Kiwis closed to 9-4 at the break. However, a Mick George try and Burke’s fourth goal gave the hosts a 10 point lead before James Leuluai set up a consolation try for the tourists. ● WIDNES VIKINGS: On This Day is available now at £9.99 from the Vikings Superstore. ●
