Huge blaze at scrapyard
● FOUR fire engines were required to put out a huge scrapyard blaze at Halebank Industrial Estate.
Fire crews from Runcorn, Penketh, Birchwood and Lymm attended the scene on Pickerings Road, as well as crews from Merseyside, after emergency services were called at 10.36am last Tuesay.
The fire sent thick plumes of black smoke high into the air at the back of Halebank Industrial Estate.
Cheshire Fire And Rescue Service said: “Firefighters dealt with a fire at a scrapyard on Pickerings Road in Widnes.
“Crews wearing four breathing apparatus, attended to find tyres and scrap cars well alight.
“The building was protected with water jets and a team inside the building conducted a thermal scan. A 45mm jet was used to dampen down the area and make it safe.”
A witness said: “I could see the smoke from Allerton Cemetery, so I decided to drive down there and see what was happening.
“I came in on to Pickerings Road. I tried to walk up there close enough to do some pictures.
“There’s multiple appliances in attendance, I’ve got four or five in sight at the moment.”
The onlooker described ‘dense black smoke’, and said the fire had drawn a small crowd who were keeping a safe distance.
Videos of the fire emerged on Twitter and one user said the incident featured several explosions.
They said: “Proper big inferno in Widnes.
“Explosions going off all the time.“
