Derek’s vol­un­tary work is re­warded

MORE good news emerged from Widnes RUFC when Derek Dyer col­lected a Lan­cashire Vol­un­teer award at a cer­e­mony held at Leigh RUFC.

He was nom­i­nated by the club for his out­stand­ing work across a wide scope of ac­tiv­i­ties.

Derek is tasked with a num­ber of re­spon­si­bil­i­ties in­clud­ing rugby chair­man, player regis­tra­tion, fixture sec­re­tary, kit man and ref­eree’s li­ai­son of­fi­cer, And, if that lot is not enough, he is also a touch judge for the first-team ev­ery Satur­day whether it be home or away!

Club pres­i­dent, Stephen Mor­ris, said: “I would just like to say how much Derek de­serves this award.

“He is a real as­set to the club. He is pos­i­tive, proac­tive, and very hard­work­ing, and takes his vol­un­tary po­si­tion at the club very se­ri­ously.”

Not only has his work been recog­nised by his peers through­out Lan­cashire, Derek along with fel­low vol­un­teer John Brett – whose work with the U14s and the girls’ U13-15 age groups has also been recog­nised – by also be­ing nom­i­nated for the pres­ti­gious Mit­subishi Mo­tors Vol­un­teer of the Year Awards.

The awards are part of the Mit­subishi Mo­tors Vol­un­teer Pro­gramme which pro­vides rugby clubs and the rugby com­mu­nity with op­por­tu­ni­ties to recog­nise and re­ward the vol­un­teers who make up such an in­te­gral part of the game.

Pres­i­dent-elect Ged Snee – who takes up the reins for 2018-19 at the club’s An­nual ● Derek Dyer ( is con­grat­u­lated by Widnes’s first-team head coach Lee McDer­mott. Gen­eral Meet­ing – also took the op­por­tu­nity to con­grat­u­late the pair.

“Both Derek and John work ex­tremely hard for the club and their nom­i­na­tions are well de­served,” he said.

Their nom­i­na­tions were just two of hun­dreds of spe­cially selected vol­un­teers in­vited to at­tend a drinks re­cep­tion at Mit­subishi Mo­tors deal­er­ships or rugby clubs in var­i­ous lo­ca­tions through­out Eng­land.

At each of these events, one vol­un­teer will be an­nounced as a Vol­un­teer of the Year fi­nal­ist – earn­ing them a place at the Mit­subishi Mo­tors Vol­un­teer of the Year Awards night which will be held later in the year at Twick­en­ham.

Three over­all win­ners will be an­nounced on the evening and each one will re­ceive a brand new Mit­subishi car for a year as a thank you for their con­tin­ued sup­port of the game. ● The club would like to re­mind mem­bers that the An­nual Gen­eral Meet­ing will take place at Heath Road on Thurs­day, June 21 start­ing at 8pm.
