Hun­dreds on the run

MORE than 900 pupils en­joyed the sun in Vic­to­ria Park, Widnes, on Thurs­day, joined by Olympic, Com­mon­wealth Games (and The Voice) star Jazmin Sawyers to ‘Go Run F For Fun’.

Go Run For Fun at Vic­to­ria P Park saw pupils from 12 pri­mary schools run­ning the 2km course.

The event was or­gan­ised by Hal­ton Bor­ough Coun­cil’s Sports De­vel­op­ment Team in part­ner­ship with the Great Run Com­pany.

Hal­ton Bor­ough Coun­cil’s ex­ec­u­tive board mem­ber for sport, Cllr Phil Har­ris, said: “Where bet­ter than this beau­ti­ful park for young peo­ple to en­joy some healthy, fun ex­er­cise. Per­haps they will get a taste for it and join one of the Park Runs. It seemed ev­ery- one en­joyed them­selves on the day and even the weather was on our side.”

The run, which saw the 240,000th child in the UK start the run, be­gan at 11am af­ter a warm-up with the event’s mas­cot, Dart

Sawyers is a Bri­tish track and field ath­lete who com­petes in the long jump. She has also com­peted as a bob­sled­der and a hep­tath­lete.

She was the sil­ver medal­list in the long jump at the 2014 Com­mon­wealth Games. In 2017, she com­peted in the sixth se­ries of The Voice UK.

Pupils from the fol­low­ing pri­mary schools at­tended: Dit­ton; Farn­worth; Simms Cross; The Grange; Hale; St John Fisher; Moor­field; Hale­bank; Lunts Heath; Wood­side; Widnes Acad­emy; St Bede’s. ● There is a Ju­nior Parkrun held at Vic­to­ria Park ev­ery Sun­day morn­ing at 9am.
