Thief stole luxury jars of honey
A RUNCORN man was sent down for two weeks for stealing luxury honey worth £150 that is now a hit with the rich and famous because of its reputation for health benefits.
Shaun Michael Clare, 29, of Quarry Close, admitted swiping three jars of manuka honey from Holland And Barrett in Widnes on August 8.
He was handed two weeks behind bars because of previous offending and told to pay £150 compensation.
Manuka honey is produced in New Zealand and has reputed health-boosting properties.
The Daily Telegraph reported in August that it was the honey of choice for film star Gwyneth Paltrow, with the article citing a health study that found it reduced gum disease and plaque.
However, not all nutritionists were convinced it was worth the cost at up to £100 a jar because foodstuffs with similar antimicrobial properties can be bought for much cheaper such as garlic.
