Man’s conviction for assaulting a paramedic sends ‘clear message’

-

THE North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) has welcomed the conviction of a Runcorn man who admitted assaulting a paramedic.

A spokeswoman for NWAS said she hoped the outcome would send a “clear message” that targeting its staff will lead to prosecution.

Matthew Anthony Kirwin-Shannon, 30, of St Austell Close, Brookvale, was sentenced to eight weeks in prison, suspended for two years at

North Cheshire Magistrates’ Court on August 21 after he pleaded guilty to Section 39 assault by beating and using threatening or abusive words or behaviour.

The charges relate to an incident on May 5.

He was also banned from driving for four years over unrelated excess alcohol and cannabis offences.

The NWAS spokeswoman said: “Our ambulance crews work tirelessly to help others and should be able to do so without fear of assault.

“We absolutely do not tolerate violence or aggression of any kind towards our staff.

“We welcome this conviction and hope this verdict sends out a clear message to the public that such actions can lead to prosecution.

“The member of staff involved has been supported by the trust and thankfully had no serious or lasting injuries.”
