Patrick Leigh Fermor: The brains behind, and leader of, the operation served with the Special Operations Executive, working behind enemy lines with the Cretan Resistance for several years. After the war, he became a celebrated travel writer and was knighted for his services.
William Stanley ‘Billy’ Moss: Leigh Fermor’s second-in-command was just 22 when he landed by boat on Crete to join the operation. After the war, he became a successful author, broadcaster and journalist. He kept a journal throughout the mission, which became the basis of the bestselling book Ill Met by Moonlight. It was later made into a film.
