Pa­trick Leigh Fer­mor: The brains be­hind, and leader of, the op­er­a­tion served with the Spe­cial Op­er­a­tions Ex­ec­u­tive, work­ing be­hind en­emy lines with the Cre­tan Re­sis­tance for sev­eral years. After the war, he be­came a cel­e­brated travel writer and was knighted for his ser­vices.

Wil­liam Stan­ley ‘Billy’ Moss: Leigh Fer­mor’s sec­ond-in-com­mand was just 22 when he landed by boat on Crete to join the op­er­a­tion. After the war, he be­came a suc­cess­ful au­thor, broad­caster and jour­nal­ist. He kept a jour­nal through­out the mis­sion, which be­came the ba­sis of the best­selling book Ill Met by Moon­light. It was later made into a film.
