Ex­er­cise now, stay well in years to come; and how to tackle pesky mid­sec­tion fat

Here’s a rea­son not to put off ex­er­cise: your lev­els of ac­tiv­ity in your late 20s and early 30s in­flu­ence your chances of be­com­ing over­weight as you age. That’s the find­ing of a study that mon­i­tored phys­i­cal ac­tiv­ity lev­els and weight in a large group of women over 12 years. The re­searchers, from the Univer­sity of Queens­land, Aus­tralia, say high ac­tiv­ity lev­els be­tween 28 and 36 years of age are ‘crit­i­cal’ for re­duc­ing the risk of be­com­ing over­weight in later years.
