People who undergo gastric bypass surgery for morbid obesity might not strike you as likely runners, but a study1 enrolled 10 such people on a 10K training programme post-surgery. As well as achieving significant weight loss (a 2.2 point reduction in body mass index), the runners lost body fat and improved their waist/hip ratio. They also improved their cardiovascular fitness and experienced a reduction in cardiovascular risk factors, anxiety and depression.
