What you say to your­self af­fects per­for­mance, says a new study1. Mo­ti­va­tional self-talk (phrases such as ‘let’s go’) led to a faster 10K time trial than when self­talk was neu­tral (nei­ther pos­i­tive nor neg­a­tive). While sub­jects worked harder, phys­i­o­log­i­cally speak­ing, in the faster time trial, their rate of per­ceived ex­er­tion was un­changed. Thanks, brain!
