When re­searchers1 com­pared the ef­fects of calo­rie re­stric­tion, en­durance ex­er­cise and a com­bi­na­tion of the two on weight loss, they saw a seven per cent re­duc­tion in weight in all groups. But en­durance ex­er­cis­ers were the real win­ners – they lost no lean body mass and im­proved their aer­o­bic ca­pac­ity by 15 per cent.
