STEVE SMYTHE

Sub-3 marathoner in five decades

Runner's World (UK) - - HUMAN RACE -

In February, Steve Smythe clocked 2:56:16 at the Seville Marathon. It was an impressive time for any runner, but for Steve, 59, it marked something special. ‘It makes me the first runner in the world to achieve a 40-year span between my first [2:54:42 in 1976] and last sub-3 times,’ says the athletics writer and coach. Steve has extended the previous record by 119 days. ‘I was pleased to get the record because I’ve struggled with injuries for the past five years,’ he says. ‘ But I lost some weight, did more strength work and less racing.’ Only 37 runners worldwide have run sub-3 in five different decades, and no one has done six – yet. ‘I think I may be able to do that in 2020,’ says Steve.
