A race goal is great, but be­ing too rigid can lead to dis­ap­point­ment, says Dr Carla Mei­jen, a sports psy­chol­o­gist at the Univer­sity of Kent. She sug­gests tak­ing the pres­sure off by set­ting three goals: a dream goal; one you’d be happy with if con­di­tions are not ideal, and a bare min­i­mum, when things don’t go to plan.
