Two years ago, Tanya was overweight and suffering from depression. ‘I barely went out,’ says the 41-year-old from Manchester. But a visit to a local dog-rescue centre resulted in her bringing home Dexter, a young Staffordshire bull terrier in need of a good home – and plenty of exercise. ‘Taking him for walks was a massive thing for me, but it gave me a reason to get out and, gradually, we began running together,’ recalls Tanya. Soon they’d both discovered the runner’s high: ‘ Dexter wakes me up each morning raring to go for his run,’ says Tanya, who’s lost 5st and is training for a half marathon. She’s also enjoying better mental health. ‘I’m not sure who rescued whom, but I do know that I’ve found the two loves of my life,’ she says. ‘ Running and my boy, Dexter.’
