My friend recently ran a half marathon for a charity that is close to her heart. She had to walk the last few miles because of injury but still got back within the cut-off time – however, the marshals had already gone and the last few runners didn’t know where to run. I ended up directing them myself while waiting for her to finish. I know marshalling is voluntary – I’ve done it many times myself – but it’s just not nice for the final finishers to get any less support than the first – they’re the ones who need the encouragement.
