Round the Rock ultra marathon

‘The race came about when I entered a round-the-island walking challenge about eight years ago,’ says Ellis-brecknell. ‘I decided to run it and afterwards thought it would make a fantastic ultra marathon. The route is about 48 miles (roughly the coastline of the island), mainly along cliff paths, trails and beaches. It’s pretty steep in places. When we first staged the race in 2011, we hoped 20 runners would do it, but about 100 started. As it’s grown, some top endurance runners, such as Steve Martelletti, Steve Way and Tobias Mews have come over and broken records. It’s a good introduction to those planning to do a 50-mile race: it’s challenging, but very enjoyable, too. It’s a fantastic way to see Jersey’s shoreline in a relatively low-key event.’ This year’s race is on August 5. Visit roundtherock.co.uk
