Rotary Club welcomes first female member
Rutherglen Rotary Club marked an historic occasion recently with the induction of its first female member.
The installation of Pat Paul took place on the same day that outgoing president Donald MacLeod handed over the presidential chain of office to the incoming Bill Liggat.
Donald enjoyed a highly successful year, in which the club continues its good work in supporting many individuals and charities.
Past president Phil Spence then gave an amusing tribute and vote of thanks to Donald for his year as president then Bill, a retired careers officer, performed his first act as president - a special moment for the club as Bill inducted its first female member, Pat Paul.
Pat was introduced by her sponsor, past president Brian Williams, and Bill then presented Pat with her new members pack to a round of applause from the club members.
However, Pat is no stranger to Rotary.
She explained: “My husband David has been a member of the club for about 38 years.
“I’ve always helped out with the Rotary, and I’m also a member of the Inner Wheel.
“I like helping others and raising money for charity, so coming to Rotary is a good way to do that.”
President Bill then welcomed invited speaker Brian McKenna to address the club.
Brian gave an excellent talk on his background and experiences as a councillor, with the Rotary motto ‘Service Above Self’ as a common theme.
The evening was concluded with a vote of thanks to Brian by Rotarian Nigel Allon on behalf of the club.
Meanwhile, the club is looking for volunteers to help them with some fundraising this weekend.
Pat said: “At the moment, I’m trying to organise a cycle around Little Cumbrae, starting in Millport, to raise money for the Kilbryde Hospice. If anyone is interested they are welcome to call me.”
