Ruther­glen res­i­dents are be­ing urged to sign up to a new mes­sag­ing ser­vice aimed at keep­ing lo­cals up to date with events around their com­mu­nity.

Safer Ruther­glen is the com­mu­nity mes­sag­ing sys­tem sup­ported by Po­lice Scot­land, Scot­tish Fire and Res­cue Ser­vice, South La­nark­shire Coun­cil and Neigh­bour­hood Watch Scot­land.

Peo­ple can reg­is­ter free with the ser­vice on­line and re­ceive alerts giv­ing out in­for­ma­tion.

Any­one who uses the ser­vice is in charge of how, when and what mes­sages are sent to them. Alerts are sent by email and text mes­sage and can also be de­liv­ered by recorded or au­to­mated voice through land­line or mo­bile tele­phones.

By sign­ing in to their ac­count, cre­ated at the web­site, they can choose what method of de­liv­ery is used for an alert de­pend­ing on what time of day it is. The ini­tia­tive gives res­i­dents in­for­ma­tion mes­sages on lo­cal crime, an­ti­so­cial be­hav­iour, fire- re­lated in­ci­dents, news, ap­peals and com­mu­nity safety ad­vice will be sent di­rectly to peo­ple by email, text or recorded phone mes­sage.
