Fighter Danny reaches final
A fighter for a Rutherglen boxing club took part in the Western District Final last month.
On Friday, November 28, in the Marriot hotel in Glasgow, Castlemilk 22-year-old Danny Burke, fighting at 75kg, was Durie’s Amateur Boxing Club’s sole representative for the Hillhouse Industrial Estate Club.
Danny won his semi-final the week before and was a huge underdog in this bout, coming up against Commonwealth Games entrant and regular Scotland internationalist Kieran Smith of Springhill ABC.
And straight from the first bell the awkward southpaw, Smith used all his experience in this bout to take a unanimous decision against Danny.
The Rutherglen boxer gave a great account of himself, giving Smith problems all the way through.
However it wasn’t to be, but Danny will definitely take positive things from only his seventh defeat in 23 bouts.
Danny’s coach Fuj Hussain said: “Danny did brilliant against a regular Scotland international and it he will learn from this experience.”
