Morgan and Jay to run for late uncle
Children to raise sponsorship for MND Scotland
A brother and sister from Cambuslang will take part in this weekend’s MND Scotland fun run to honour the memory of their tragic uncle.
Morgan (10) and Jay Paulley (8), who stay in Dalziel Crescent, will take part in the event, along with their cousin, Emma Collins (10), from Castlemilk.
The trio were inspired to sign up by the memory of Morgan and Jay’s uncle Robert Paulley, who passed away from motor neurone disease nearly two years ago.
After setting an initial target of £100, they have already raised over £700.
All three kids attend Croftfoot Primary School, and Morgan and Jay’s mum, Sammy, is delighted to see them take on the challenge.
She said: “We’re so proud of them, it’s a cause so close to their hearts.
“All the kids doted on Robert and he doted on them.
“He was an amazing uncle to them.
“The kids heard that a couple of Robert’s friends were doing the run and they asked if they could do it too. We signed them up and they’ve all got their t-shirts and everything, they’re really looking forward to it.”
Robert, brother to Sammy’s husband, Jason, was only 32 when he lost his battle against MND in September 2013.
He had been diagnosed five years previously, and the family endured a painful time as his condition deteriorated.
MND, which affects the cells that control voluntary muscle activity, has been in the news recently with former Rangers star Fernando Ricksen revealing he has been suffering from the disease.
It previously claimed the life of Celtic legend Jimmy Johnstone.
Sammy said: “It’s such a horrible disease.
“Robert was diagnosed about five years before he died and it just slowly progressed. He was a brilliant guy and was always great with the kids. He always looked out for other people.
“When he was diagnosed, he dealt with it better than everyone else. He was just so strong minded and never complained.”
The MND Scotland fun run is taking place on Saturday (May 16) at 11am in Strathclyde Park.
Morgan, Jay and Emma are taking on the four-mile course, but Sammy doesn’t think they’ll have any problem completing it: “They can’t wait to do it. They are all quite fit and they’ve done some running, so I’m sure they will be fine.
“They have already exceeded expectations but they’re hoping to raise even more money. We’ve already been amazed at the generosity of people.”
