Celebrations and a warning message
Reformer readers took to our social media pages to react to Margaret Ferrier’s stunning victory in Rutherglen and Hamilton West last week.
Most people were celebrating the result, but others warned it would not be good for the area.
Among those toasting Ms Ferrier’s victory was Elaine Nicol who said on Facebook:“Well done.
“I am over 60 and for the first time in my life I have an MP I voted for. What a night. I have dreamt of this day since I was putting leaflets into envelopes when I was 10 for the 1964 election.”
Colin Laird wrote:“Congratulations Margaret! Not only is she Rutherglen’s first ever SNP MP, she is also Rutherglen’s first ever female MP. Truly a historic victory.”
On Twitter, many of you followed events through our live updates.
There was even words of consolation for Tom Greatrex from SNP supporters, with Tom Triano writing on Facebook:“Can’t say Greatrex didn’t do a good job in the Cambuslang and Rutherglen area.
“Weak leadership from Miliband and his point blank refusal to work with the SNP cost him in the end. Shame for Greatrex but happy for the SNP who seem to be a party that is for the people and the results show that!” But not everyone was happy with the result. Davy Robertson Oneil said on Facebook:“Very sad day for the old Royal Burgh of Rutherglen.”
KB McPlaster described the results as “Embarrassing.”
Can’t believe the swing! Thoroughly delighted & have no doubt Margaret will work hard for her constituency Hope won over fear. Positivity triumphed over negativity
