SEE THE LIGHT
South Lanarkshire Council are set to light up a street leading to a railway bridge in Burnside.
Residents had been concerned that the bridge leading to Burnside Train Station, located on Blairtum Drive at the corner of Victoria Road, was too dark.
They were particularly concerned for people’s safety.
One resident, who lives close by said: “It got too dark at night, especially if it was winter.
“It got quite tough to see where you were going and someone who was older and going up the steps could easily fall.
“I’m glad it’s been fixed and hopefully it makes people feel safer”.
The subject was broached at a Burnside Community Council meeting last week at Rutherglen Lawn Tennis Club by Councillor Robert Brown who was pleased to report that lighting columns would be installed.
He said: “New lighting columns will be installed there, it has been an issue for quite some time and I am glad it is going to be resolved.”
He a d of roads and transportation at the council, Gordon Mackay, said: “We do not own this bridge but do have responsibility for the lighting columns that are located in the streets around it.
“We have installed a column adjacent to the bridge which will help to illuminate it.
“The column installation has now been completed and the electrical work will take place next week.”
The next meeting of Burnside Community Council will take place on Wednesday, September 2, at Rutherglen Lawn Tennis Club on Viewpark Drive at 7.30pm and all are welcome to attend.
