A Cambuslang man is the new chairman of the East Kilbride Branch of the Royal British Legion.

Former Royal Engineer Mick Connor (47) was invited by the legion committee to take charge of running the branch and social club last month, following the death of long-time chair John Cochrane, who died in March.

Mick, who lives in Cambuslang with wife Susanne, is also a former soldier.

After paying tribute to the work done by his predecessor over many years, he says his first job is to re-establish the branch as being a source of help to veterans living in the area, a purpose very close to John’s heart.

And, to that effect, he has already confirmed the legion social club in the Village will host the annual Armed Forces Veterans’ Day which will this year take place on Thursday, June 25.

Mick said he would also be looking at different opportunities throughout the year to offer support to ex-service personnel who live in the area and require the branch’s expertise.

A member of the Royal British Legion for around 20 years, Mick served with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers for six years in England and Germany before returning to civvy street in 1990.

He currently works as a residential child care officer with Glasgow City Council’s social work department.

Mick said both he and his wife had known John for many years, Mick through his involvement with the legion, especially following the closure of the Cambuslang branch some years ago when he joined the East Kilbride branch, and through his work with the Army Cadet Force based at East Kilbride, and their annual involvement in the annual Remembrance Parade.

Mick is also former welfare officer and chairman of the Riders’ Branch of the Legion, a role he stepped down from when taking over the chairmanship of the East Kilbride Branch.

Susanne, who served with the Royal Intelligence Corps from 1996 to 2001 with postings to Northern Ireland and Albania, knew John through his late wife, Margaret, whom she met when Margaret was working as a cook at a children’s home.

Mick and Susanne married in 1999 and have two children, daughter Caitlin ( 12) and nine- year- old son Scott.
