Honours for club’s stars
Player of the year awards handed out
Cambuslang Rugby Club honoured its top performers at its annual player of the year night last week.
The clubhouse was packed as the club’s senior section celebrated the end of a successful campaign, which saw them win promotion after finishing second in the BT West League Two table.
Eddie Beaton picked up the honour of being the club’s most improved player, while Alec Bean was player of the year, after having five seasons as runner-up in various categories.
And there was a third honour on the night, with outgoing captain James McLaren being presented with a trophy for the club finishing second and winning promotion.
James said: “Young Eddie was presented with the prize for the most improved player.
“He came into the first XV not too long ago, and he has come on leaps and bounds.
“It will be interesting to see how he does next year now we’ve won promotion.”
Coach Robbie Stewart added: “He has improved by those simplest of methods, hard work and practice, being the club’s most regular trainer and always ready to follow the advice and guidance of the coaching team.
“Eddie has also shown leadership potential assuming greater responsibility within the team and will continue to develop into a key player and respected opponent at Cambuslang Rugby Club.”
Picking up the player of the year title was Alec Bean.
James said: “Alec always does his best, and stands out a mile on the park.
“He’s a cracking wee player and I’m very pleased that he won it. He puts in a lot of hard work, and he really does deserve it.”
The awards night was James’ last event as captain, having handed over the armband to Gregor Jones for the season ahead.
James added: “I’ve had a lot of work and family commitments, and I wasn’t always making it to training and arriving on time for the start of games, so it’s the right time to hand it over to Gregor.
“It was nice to finish off by winning promotion.”
