Volunteering is rewarding and helps the community
People looking to get involved in their community by volunteering have the perfect chance to do so next week.
As part of National Volunteer Week, which runs from June 1-7, the Healthy ‘n’ Happy community development trust have a host of activities and taster sessions taking place.
On Monday, June 1, the first session is ReConnect, running from 1-3pm.
This is a really rewarding volunteer role, working with older people who want to get out and about and improve their social lives.
Try it out at the ReConnect Group: Clydeford View Sheltered Housing Complex, Allison Drive, Cambuslang.
Taking place the same day from 2-4pm is the Handy Folk. They are a DIY group for those with handy skills and those who’d like to gain some. Volunteers host this fun group that’s open to all.
Visit the Springhall Community Centre, 30 Crauchan Road, Rutherglen, for details.
Taking place on Tuesday, June 2, is CamGlen Radio, from 1-3pm.
This is a live, on-air community radio station run entirely by volunteers – go along and have a go if you think you’re chatty enough! Visit the studio and get involved at 16 Farmeloan Road, Rutherglen.
Also taking place at the same venue is the information station, a volunteer radio show-cum-pop up-stand providing info on all the local services available to the communities of Cambuslang and Rutherglen.
Wednesday, June 3, is an event for cyclists, with a Bike Town event from 10am-2pm.
This is an event for people who love cycling or wish they could cycle with confidence. Experienced cyclists are invited to try out their guided ride meeting at 10am at the Bike Town Container, at 78 Cambuslang Road, Rutherglen.
Inexperienced cyclists are invited to join the group at the Free Wheel North for fun with bikes. Transport is provided so book a place by calling Mel on 0141 646 0123. There will be a meeting at Healthy ‘n’ Happy at 10.30am, again at 16 Farmeloan Road, Rutherglen.

This is a great volunteer role, supporting groups established for parents and their babies, where tea, toast, singing, fun and games are a must. Give it a go at Whitlawburn Community Resource Centre, 57 Belmont Road, Cambuslang.
For those who want to walk more, there’s a meeting from 10.30-11.30am. Those interest can try this brand new volunteer role with Healthy ‘n’ Happy, a taster will involve getting outside and walking locally with a group of like-minded people, and will finish up with a cuppa.
