• Reduce your speed – driving slower than 60mph will reduce emissions, save fuel and save you money.
• Drive smoothly – hard acceleration and sharp braking increase fuel consumption.
• Switch off your engine – if you are stuck in traffic for more than a minute turn the engine off.
A council spokesperson said: “Great strides have been made over recent years in tackling air pollution however there are some pockets of poorer air quality. These pockets are usually found within more urban locations where a higher number of vehicles are found.
“The impact of poorer air quality affects the more vulnerable members of our society and the elderly, the very young and those with cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, are at greatest risk.
“We can’t avoid breathing the air that surrounds us. That is why it is so important that we all take action to protect this very essential and precious resource.”
