• Re­duce your speed – driv­ing slower than 60mph will re­duce emis­sions, save fuel and save you money.

• Drive smoothly – hard ac­cel­er­a­tion and sharp brak­ing in­crease fuel con­sump­tion.

• Switch off your en­gine – if you are stuck in traf­fic for more than a minute turn the en­gine off.

A coun­cil spokesper­son said: “Great strides have been made over re­cent years in tack­ling air pol­lu­tion how­ever there are some pock­ets of poorer air qual­ity. Th­ese pock­ets are usu­ally found within more ur­ban lo­ca­tions where a higher num­ber of ve­hi­cles are found.

“The im­pact of poorer air qual­ity af­fects the more vul­ner­a­ble mem­bers of our so­ci­ety and the el­derly, the very young and those with car­dio­vas­cu­lar and re­s­pi­ra­tory con­di­tions, are at great­est risk.

“We can’t avoid breath­ing the air that sur­rounds us. That is why it is so im­por­tant that we all take ac­tion to pro­tect this very es­sen­tial and pre­cious re­source.”
