Witnesses to blaze sought
Po l i ce are seeking witnesses after a willful fire raising took place at Farme Castle Industrial Estate in Rutherglen this week.
The incident took place at the estate in Duchess Place in the early hours of Monday morning ( June 15).
It is understood the building in question contained around 30 vehicles.
On receipt of the initial call at around midnight firefighters from Polmadie and Clydesmill community fire stations were sent to the scene and on arrival were faced with a rapidly developing fire. The initial officer in charge immediately requested assistance and further crews from Cowcaddens fire station were also mobilised to assist.
The Fire Service received numerous calls from the public due to the large volumes of smoke from the incident moving across the area.
With the additional danger of the fuel contained within the fuel tanks of the vehicles within the building six firefighters were tasked with attacking the fire internally wearing breathing apparatus and using three large bore firefighting jets.
The fire spread into the roof space of the building, which required the use of a specialist ‘high reach’ fire appliance to direct large amounts of water onto the roof of the building.
Inspector Jim Gillespie of Rutherglen Police Office said police were seeking witnesses to the incident: “Following an investigation we are treating the incident as a willful fire raising.
“Enquiries are on going and any witnesses can contact 0141 532 5210.”
