Guests of honour at ‘Entourage’ premier
It’s a long way from the Cambuslang to the glitz and glamour of London’s Leicester Square, but it’s a route that has now been travelled by Sean O’Kane.
The 51-year-old and his family were guests of Sean’s best pal, Kevin Dillon, at the premiere of the Entourage movie last Wednesday.
Sean and Kevin have been pals since the 1980’s when the pair roomed together as jobbing actors.
When Kevin, younger brother of There’s Something About Mary star, Matt, got his big break in the Entourage TV show, he didn’t forget those who had stood by him when things were tough.
So he ordered Sean, his wife Yvonne and 14- year- old daughter Lauren to London last week for the full VIP treatment.
While Sean and Yvonne enjoyed the film, Kevin whisked Lauren out for a night on the town with the rest of the cast.
But Sean reckons his daughter, who was once Matt Dillon’s date at their other brother, Paul’s, wedding, was less than impressed.
He laughs: “She was just oblivious, she didn’t know who these guys even are.
“Kevin took Lauren and his own daughter, Ava (9) out for dinner with the other guys, they went to a fivestar restaurant, but she was so calm about it.
“At Paul’s (Dillon) wedding 10 years ago, Matt actually asked her to be her date. We got to New York and Matt said he didn’t have a date, imagine Matt Dillon not having a date for his brother’s wedding.
“He said ‘I’ll need to take Lauren then,’ but she didn’t want to go with him. I think that must be the first time he’s been turned down for a date, but she went along.”
One of 12 siblings, Sean grew up in Cambuslang Circuit, becoming interested in acting while at school.
In the UK, he became known for the titular role in cult 80’s game show, The Interceptor, before trying his luck across the pond where he met Paul Dillon and became his roommate.
Through Paul, he met Kevin and the pair became pals, with their friendship showing no signs of abating over time.
Sean said: “Kevin and I lived together for about seven years after I stayed with Paul. We were just two struggling actors starting out who would read each other’s lines.
“We did that for years and years and he never forgot that even when he hit it big with Entourage.
“I actually read with him when he was going for the part. He’s never forgotten us struggling together.
“He’s a very loyal guy and a loyal friend. Generally it can be a very fickle business, but he’s grown up in an Irish background in a tough part of New York and has remembered that.
“For the premiere, Kevin spoiled us rotten. He called me from LA and said ‘you better get to London and get to the premiere.’
“When we got there, he really gave us the red carper treatment.
“At the premiere, I was sitting next to Leona Lewis and the magician, Dynamo. I was kidding on I didn’t know who he was, asking if he was a lightweight boxer and when he said he was a magician, I said ‘a musician? In what band?’”
Kevin was set to enjoy a few days in Scotland with Sean last week, and had no qualms about roughing it when he visited.
Sean, who now bases himself in Ayrshire having returned from the US last year, is in the process of moving homes, with the family currently in a caravan on the grounds of the new property.
He laughs: “I told him if he was staying with me it would be in a caravan, and he said ‘ let’s do the caravan then’.
“He’s going from five-star hotels to a caravan, but that just shows the measure of his character. He doesn’t care about all the showbiz stuff.”
Sean, who did a voiceover in Oscarwinning movie Million Dollay Baby, is preparing to star in Requiem for the Ripper alongside Mischa Barton, and Study in red, both about Jack the Ripper based on the novels of Brian L Porter.
But for now, he’s happy to encourage everyone to support his friends new flick.
The story of actor Vince Chase and his childhood friends from New York also stars the likes of Adrian Grenier, Kevin Connolly and Jeremy Piven.
It has proved a hit on TV all over the world, and is set to do the same on the big screen according to Sean: “The first time I seen Entourage on TV I couldn’t stop laughing, it was belly-achingly funny.
“It’s the nature of the show, just a bunch of guys trying to make it. We’ve all gone through that stuff.”
