Gus expects his side to shape up
Players get set to report back for duty
Queen’s Park boss Gus MacPherson is gearing up for next season as his players are due to report back after their holidays.
The Spiders will under go fitness tests tomorrow (Wednesday) and then have their first training session on Saturday.
Queen’s have a packed pre-season schedule, starting with a closed door friendly against Partick Thistle at Lesser Hampden.
They will also take on Broomhill, Hearts, and Dunfermilne before heading to a training camp in Durham where they will face Consett Town and Bishop Auckland.
Their first official game will be in the Petrofac Cup first round which will take place on Saturday, July 25.
And right now Gus insists the priority is getting the players’ fitness up to scratch. However he also said he has no concerns with regards to players coming back overweight:
“It’s not something I’ve ever had to deal with.
“Modern day footballers look after themselves, they have a fitness schedule to keep to when their off and they stick to it.
“Football is a very physical game now and so much of it is about fitness, the players know themselves they can’t report back overweight or it can affect their performance.”
“Right now it’s all about preparation for pre-season. The players report back for their fitness test tomorrow (Wednesday) and then we hold the first training sessions on Saturday.
“We had quite a long season, the players have only been off a few weeks since we were playing right up until May in the play-offs so their fitness won’t really have dropped.
“We’ve got a good pre-season schedule lined up that’ll get the players’ match fitness sharp.”
Another player departed Queen’s as striker Ross McPherson is heading to junior side Irvine Meadows. The 27year-old former Clydebank player scored twice last season for QP.
Gus added: “In terms of signings there’s been nothing new at the moment, it will probably be a few weeks before we announce anything.”
