New signings will be well worth the wait

Willie Harvey reckons Glencairn fans will be excited by some of his new signings this summer - even if they have to wait to find out who they are.

The Glens gaffer is on the verge of sealing a number of deals with players’ contracts set to run out over the weekend.

Although he can’t reveal any names, Willie is confident the new signings will add something to the squad.

And the boss also revealed he was looking to shore up the defence for next season: “Things are happening, but at the same time there is nothing to report.

“Signings will take place, but right now there are ongoing negotiations.

“We’re very close to firming players up and I’d expect we can announce some next week.

“The players we are looking at have proved themselves at the level we’re at or the level above.

“You look at the defence, and I would never say any of the players let us down, but it doesn’t take a brain surgeon to work out there were gaps.

“Our goals for and goals against column are virtually the same, so we need to close up at the back.”

One player Willie was happy to reveal was on his radar is Dunipace’s midfield captain, Mark Batchelor, former with Cambuslang Rangers, who Willie says is “very close to signing.”

But the gaffer is still waiting to hear if two familiar faces will return to New Southcroft next season.

Denis McLaughlin has gone on holiday without making a decision while Kris Irvine hasn’t been in contact and seems destined to go elsewhere. Willie said: “Denis is on hold. Kris Irvine, I’ve not heard from him, he seems to have fallen off the radar, I really don’t know what’s happening.

“With Denis, we’ll find out exactly what’s happening when he comes back.

“I’d love to be able to tell you he’s signed, but he’s not made a decision yet.”
