Stal­wart Su­san dies

Cam­bus­lang com­mu­nity coun­cil­lor Su­san Smith has died at the age of 68 af­ter a long ill­ness.

The com­mu­nity stal­wart passed away in the early hours of Sun­day morn­ing at Hairmyres Hos­pi­tal.

Su­san, who also served on the Sum­mer­fest com­mit­tee, was born and bred in Cam­bus­lang, grow­ing up in the Cir­cuit as one of three sis­ters and a brother.

She at­tended St Bride’s Pri­mary in the town and later worked for the elec­tric­ity board in Glas­gow.

She lived in Whit­law­burn for a pe­riod be­fore mov­ing to Borgie Cres­cent, where she stayed for many years. Her hus­band, John, passed away a few years ago and her only child, Mark, died in 2009.

Su­san’s friend, Coun­cil­lor Clare McColl, said: “Su­san was well re­spected by ev­ery­one and you were al­ways due a lively de­bate when she came to the meet­ings. She will be sadly missed.”

Jack Tay­lor, chair of the com­mu­nity coun­cil, added: “Su­san was a very at­ten­tive, ar­tic­u­late, wor­thy and welcome mem­ber of the com­mu­nity coun­cil.”

Sum­mer­fest com­mit­tee chair, John Edgar added:“She was a lovely woman, al­ways bub­bly and joy­ful and she couldn’t do enough to help peo­ple.”

Her fu­neral ser­vice will take place at St Bride’s on Satur­day (June 28) at 10am.
