Boxing club that was on ropes beats the count
A popular Rutherglen boxing club has been saved from closure thanks to a bighearted woman - and a little help from the Reformer.
Last week we reported that Durie’s Boxing Club, who have over 200 members on their books, were in severe financial difficulty.
Coach Archie Durie had started writing to businesses to try and secure sponsorship to save the club, which teetered on the brink over just a couple of thousand pounds.
However, after spotting the article on the Reformer’s website Anne Armstrong, who runs Doonhamers ABC in Dumfries, stepped up to help.
She offered Durie’s £2000 to pay their rent for the remainder of the year.
Archie, who runs the Hillhouse Industrial Estate Club in Rutherglen, said: “I’d like to thank Anne from the bottom of my heart. I am so grateful for everything she has done for the
club. She has given us security for the year.
“We still have financial problems but it is such a help to get that money and secure our rent for the remainder of the year.
“I’d like to thank everyone at the club for helping out in our time of need. I’d like to thank the Reformer for doing the story and for covering us over all these years.”
In previous years Archie had paid the £4500 rent for his premises up front, covering the full year.
2015 is the first time he has not been able to do that and is having to pay month by month.
He said a combination of a drop in numbers of people attending and a lack of home shows is to blame for the current bleak situation.
But now Anne (45), who owns AA fitness where Doonhamers ABC operate out of, has secured the club’s premises till the end of 2015.
Anne and Archie are both international coaches with Boxing Scotland and have travelled with the Scotland squad together.
Anne said it all came about after someone shared the Reformer story on her Facebook page: “I saw it and phoned him straight away. My mum has always believed in helping people and that’s why I want to give something back.
“I’ve been successful in business and if I can give something back I will.
“I’ve known Archie for years. He’s got a cracking club with terrific boxers. He’s a great guy and always puts his club first. That’s why I wanted to help him.”
Archie added: “What Anne has done for us is tremendous but we’re still looking for sponsorship and we would appreciate anyone who can help us getting in contact.”
