Spiders prepare for visit of Forfar

Revenge match for 2010 cup defeat

Rutherglen Reformer - - Drive Time Extra - John Gorrod

Queen’s Park will host Forfar Athletic in the first round of the League Cup on August 1.

When the sides last met, in August 2010, Forfar emerged as 3-2 victors after extra-time in the Challenge Cup second round.

The Loons play a division above Queen’s Park and last season fell to an agonising 4-3 play-off final defeat against Alloa.

And Forfar boss Dick Campbell recently said that this season’s outfit is stronger than the one which narrowly missed out on promotion.

The Spiders failed to make it past the first round of the League Cup last time out as Kris Boyd netted twice in a 2-1 win for Rangers.

Manager Gus MacPherson said: “It’s nice to be at home. They play in the league above, had an excellent season last year and will probably look at us and think that they could have had a harder draw.

“They have a lot of experienced players and probably the most experienced manager in Scottish football.”

He continued: “They will look forward to playing at Hampden. Any group of players, even from a higher level, look forward to playing at Hampden. It is an arena.”

Queen’s Park kicked off pre-season with a 5-0 loss to Falkirk – although they fielded two different sides and several of the players were trialists.

The Bairns, playing their first match since losing the Scottish Cup final to Inverness Caledonian Thistle, ran out comfortable winners after scoring twice in the first half and adding three goals, one from the penalty spot, in the second.

Gus said: “It is just a fitness element at this stage; we put two teams together. It was probably a bit early to play a team of that quality. We have more games coming up in the next week and we are assessing the players.”

The Spiders were due to play Partick last night, after the Reformer went to print, and will face East Kilbride on Thursday.

Gus is pleased at his team’s pre-season preparations so far. He said: “We will look to add another two or three players. The fitness levels are very good, although we have been a bit disrupted with holidays.

“We have four or five players away but a lot of clubs at this level have that.”
