McAvoy: We can’t plan for the future

Rutherglen Reformer - - News -

Council leader Eddie McAvoy has criticised last week’s budget for not outlining a three-year funding settlement for Scotland.

The councillor for Rutherglen Central and North said the biggest impact would be felt by those on benefits.

And he was also unhappy the council cannot plan for the future as they look to balance the books in the coming years.

A few weeks ago, we reported that officers were predicting nearly £85million worth of cuts over the next three years.

But that will not be confirmed until a settlement is reached.

He said: “The £12billion cuts will affect a lot of people on benefits and councils will need to come in and help these people. He also didn’t announce the three year spending review. It’s July now and we’re coming into August, yet we have no idea how to set our budget.”
