Poll shows just how happy we really are in Rutherglen and Cambuslang

Rutherglen Reformer - - News -

Money may make the world go round but a strong community is the biggest driver of happiness, according to recent poll of Cambuslang and Rutherglen residents.

Over 85 per cent of residents put community issues first in the poll carried out by local charity Healthy ‘n’ Happy Community Development Trust.

Rutherglen residents were surveyed during the Landemer Day festival by none other than a cheery yellow Mr Happy. Volunteers of the charity dressed as the character that famously let the world know ‘Glasgow Smiles better’, to ask the question, ‘What makes the people of Cambuslang and Rutherglen happy?’

Communications officer for Healthy ‘n’ Happy Nick Watt said: “The question was really open ended so to hear local people say such great things specifically about where they live was really uplifting.

“The survey was part of a wider campaign from Healthy ‘n’ Happy that also included Cambuslang, where Mr Happy made a similar appearance at the Summerfest gala day.”

The campaign comes as part of the build up to the opening of a new community hub at 18 Farmeloan Road. The hub will play host to a range of community purposed events and activities including housing the studios of local community radio station CamGlen Radio on 107.9FM.

The new community hub, the name of which has yet to be released, will officially open its doors to the public in early October.

With the idea of community being valued so strongly by the people of Cambuslang and Rutherglen, the opening of this community hub seems to be coming at the perfect time.

Here’s what some of the residents said makes them happy:

“There are plenty of opportunities to get involved with the community”

“Helping at the Cambuslang Allotment Garden”

“Playing football for Cambuslang Rangers”

“My family make me happy, don’t know about healthy mind you”

“Those fantastic hairdressers make me happy”

“Spending time with my children running around in our back garden”

“The lion dog that’s always on Rutherglen Main Street. Seeing him makes me smile.”

Happiness Healthy ‘n’ Happy have asked Rutherglen and Cambuslang residents what makes them happy at Landemer Day and Summerfest
