Jamie is all booted up for Hydro world record attempt

Rutherglen Reformer - - News - Douglas Dickie

A Rutherglen war veteran has been left stunned after securing the Glasgow Hydro for his attempt to break a world record.

Jamie Kennedy is aiming to smash the record for the worlds largest bootcamp on Sunday, September 13.

He had been looking for a venue but never imagined he would secure somewhere so prestigious.

The former Burgh and Stonelaw pupil is also hoping to raise as much money as possible for the Erskine charity for ex-servicemen and women.

And with the Hydro secured, he hopes it will encourage people to get behind his world record attempt.

He said: “I kind of thought we never stood a chance of getting the Hydro, but I think because of what it is for they’ve looked at it and thought they could fit it in.

“I’ve a guy working with me called Billy Stevenson, I was put onto him by Erskine and he’s got a lot of contacts.

“It feels real now. It’s only seven weeks away, it seems to have come from nowhere and there’s lots of organising to do.

“I don’t think numbers are going to be a problem. In fact, we might need to reduce the number because it’s indoor now, but we’ll still be well over the world record. The biggest issue is trying to get sponsorship, but we’ve had a few companies get in touch.”

Jamie (33) joined the RAF at 19 but soon transferred to the Army, becoming a bomb disposal expert with 11 EOD regiment.

After serving in places like Northern Ireland, his last tour was of Afghanistan before injury forced him out after 11 years.

He tore ligaments in his left knee. His cartilage was removed and he was on crutches or 12 weeks.

He is now is currently a fitness instructor based in Xercise4less in East Kilbride.

The current world record for the largest bootcamp stands at 2061.

Jamie added: “I’ve started working on the programme for the actual session. All I can do is turn up on the day and take people through a workout, which I do every day for a job anyway.

“The admin side has been a bit of a nightmare but Billy has been a great help with that.

“We’ve had to look at the pricing structure though because we’re now in the Hydro and it’s looking like it will be £10 to take part and £5 for spectators.”

Tickets for the event are expected to become available soon.
