Lib Dem praises new leader

Ruther­glen and Cam­bus­lang’s only Lib­eral Demo­crat politi­cian has wel­comed the elec­tion of the party’s new leader.

Coun­cil­lor Robert Brown said Tim Far­ron MP will rep­re­sent a“new start” for the party af­ter their dis­as­trous per­for­mance at May’s gen­eral elec­tion.

Mr Far­ron, a for­mer Pres­i­dent of the Lib­eral Democrats, was elected over for­mer Min­is­ter Nor­man Lamb MP.

He suc­ceeds Nick Clegg MP who re­signed af­ter the party held on to just eight seats fol­low­ing five years of coali­tion with the Con­ser­va­tives.

Coun­cil­lor Brown, who rep­re­sents Ruther­glen South, said:“The elec­tion of Tim Far­ron by the Lib­eral Demo­crat mem­bers across the United King­dom marks a new start for the Party af­ter the elec­toral chal­lenges of the Coali­tion.

“Tim will be a much­needed strong Lib­eral voice, a cam­paigner and a win­ner.”
