A close shave
Lorraine set to go bald for a good cause
A Cambuslang woman will have a close shave this month – all in aid of a charity close to her heart.
Lorraine Marshall (53), from Westburn, will ‘Brave the Shave’ for Macmillan on August 22 with plenty of support from her colleagues at the East Kilbride Debenhams department store.
As well as Lorraine’s charity head shave there will also be music from local songstress, Hannah White, and nibbles provided by the cafe in store.
Lorraine’s partner, Andrew Faulds (66), previously president of Whitefield Bowling Club, was diagnosed with terminal bowel, liver and lung cancer last May and has undergone numerous gruelling rounds of chemotherapy.
But Lorraine, who already took part in Macmillan’s ‘Go Sober for October’ event decided she wanted to continue to raise as much money as possible to raise awareness.
Macmillan are a source of support, helping with all the things that people affected by cancer want and need.
She told the Reformer: “Having already raised money through ‘Go Sober for October’, I was sent details for ‘Brave the Shave’ and decided to go for it.
“My store manager at East Kilbride, Craig Stewart, has been fantastic by letting me hold the charity head shave in Debenhams and the shopping centre have also been great by promoting the event on their Facebook page and telling me if I need anything else to just ask.
“The in-store salon, Valdis, are doing the headshave for me and I have organised music and nibbles.
“I never expected to get the support I have had from everyone at East Kilbride – it’s been fantastic.”
Lorraine went on: “Andrew’s diagnosis came completely out of the blue.
“He had been feeling a little under the weather then within two weeks we were told it was cancer and it had spread to the bowel, liver and lungs.
“It was such a shock and we are now waiting to get the results from the latest round of chemo, so it’s a bit of an anxious time at the minute.
“I want to raise as much money as I can and raise as much awareness as possible – Andrew had always been relatively fit but cancer touches so many people these days.
“Andrew has undergone 24 sessions of chemo and is fighting this horrible illness very bravely. I want to raise as much as possible.
“To be honest I am trying not to think about the fact I am getting my head shaved for now but I am not sure what I will be like nearer the time. “It is all for a good cause though.” She added: “I’m quite nervous but I’m sure I’ll be alright in the day, I’ve got lots of support.”
The charity head shave will take place at 2.30pm in Debenhams in Centre West, Cornwall Street, East Kilbride.
