A Halfway man who became an internet sensation after posing in a mankini to win his future wife’s dream holiday has been left gutted to find out his efforts were not enough.

Martin McKenna ( 32) wanted to win the wedding at St Andrew’s Old Course Hotel for him and fiancee, Tina Gibson (35) by completing a list of challenges.

He posted a picture of himself in a mankini to try and raise his social media profile, and the picture ended up going global with people posting pictures of themselves from various famous sites with the message “Martin & Tina to win #ochwedding”.

Messages of support came in from far-flung places like the USA, Australia, Indonesia and even Angola from a group of oil workers.

Martin even donned a cheerleading outfit to entertain the crowd at a St Anthony’s junior football game.

But the judges decided the former St Cadoc’s Primary and Trinity High pupils efforts weren’t enough to net him the top prize.

He told the Reformer: “We’d just like to thank everyone for their amazing support, it still continues to amaze us, and one day I will give Tina her dream wedding.”

Messages of support poured in from pals, with one saying: “Sure you’ll be able to have the wedding you both want and you won’t ever forget the fun and memories you had doing it!”

Another said: “Their loss! Yous would have been the best couple to have as the face of their hotel... Pure sincerity and an amazing effort plus all the limelight you gave them!”

So close Martin McKenna just failed to win a dream wedding for fiancee, Tina
