Only months after almost going bust, a Rutherglen Boxing Club are getting set to hold their first show of the season.

Durie’s Boxing Club, who operate out of Hillhouse Industrial Estate, will hold their first boxing show of the new season on Sunday, September 27 at the King’s Park Hotel.

Club coach Archie Durie says they should have 13 boxers ready to fight.

However Archie admits there were times this year when he doubted the show would even be on.

As previously reported in the Reformer Durie’s, who have over 200 members on their books, were in severe financial difficulty earlier this year.

Coach Archie Durie had started writing to businesses to try and secure sponsorship to save the club, which teetered on the brink over just a couple of thousand pounds.

However, after spotting the article on the Reformer’s website Anne Armstrong, who runs Doonhamers ABC in Dumfries, stepped up to help.

Anne and Archie are both international coaches with Boxing Scotland and have travelled with the Scotland squad together.

She offered Durie’s £2000 to pay their rent for the remainder of the year.

And the club has received other donations, saving them from closure and keeping their doors open.

Archie said: “It looked grim earlier on, there were times when I didn’t think we would get to this stage.

“I’m doing all the footwork just now to make sure we’re ready fro the show, but don’t get me wrong, I’m glad to be doing it!

“It will be great to hold another show.

“We held the first club meeting earlier this month, we were able to get affiliated with Boxing Scotland again, which was a big boost as it means others fighters can travel and take part in our shows and it means our fighters can take part in other tournaments.

“We’ve had other gyms up to spar with the boys to keep them fresh, we’re preparing really well for the show, as we always do.”

Tickets are still available for the show, priced at £15 each.

Archie added: “Even through all the hard time my fighters have been in the gym training hard and getting ready for this show.

“There’s going to be a lot of local people in action and it would be good if people came out and supported one of their local clubs.”

The club are still looking for sponsors for the bouts.

For £130 sponsors will receive a full page in the show programme as well as two VIP tickets and a chance to present the trophies in the ring.

For tickets or to sponsor a bout contact Archie on 07590515576.
