Golf club to celebrate a legend
A Rutherglen golf club is set to celebrate the life of one of the pioneers of Scottish golf.
Ysobel Greenlees was the founder of the West of Scotland Ladies Inter Club League, which this year is celebrating it’s 75th Anniversary.
Cathkin Braes are the current defending champions, having been one of the original 28 clubs who contest what has become known as “The Greenlees”.
To mark the special anniversary, Cathcart Castle Golf Club are hosting a special Greenlees Anniversary Tri Am on Saturday, September 19.
That will be followed by the Greenlees Prizegiving Lunch on October 20 and the AGM on November 178.
Jean Smith, Ladies Handicap Secretary at Cathcart, said: “Mrs Greenlees’ purpose in starting the league was to give club players, especially the younger ones, greater experience in playing competitive matchplay golf.” Born in Glasgow in 1902, Ysobel learned her golf at Prestwick St Nicholas, and became Club Champion at age 25.
She became West of Scotland Champion in 1932.
She also represented Britain at international level and was known as a vivacious, powerful golfer.” She died in 1996.
