Early learning service grows

Young people aged three and four in South Lanarkshire are benefiting from more hours of early learning than ever before.

All eligible three and four-year-olds are now entitled to 600 hours of funded pre-school education in local authority or partner nurseries thanks to the Children and Young People (Scotland) Act 2014.

Councillor Brian McKenna, depute chair of South Lanarkshire Council’s Education Resources Committee, said: “By offering what is effectively a funded morning or afternoon nursery session for every three and four-year-old, we are providing them with an essential platform and gateway into learning.”

From this year there will also be an increase in the number of two-year-olds entitled to funded nursery education, depending on criteria currently used for the provision of free school meals.

Consultation on the future delivery of flexible early learning and childcare will begin later this year.

The previous consultation which involved a range of stakeholders concluded in March 2014.
